UGANDA NATIONAL PARKS,SAFARIS,BWINDI NATIONAL PARK GORILLAS

BWINDI IMPENETRABLE NATIONAL PARK

Bwindi impenetrable National Park, a habitat to 326 gorillas almost half of the world's population of mountain gorillas, is located in the South Western part of Uganda.
The park on the edge of the western rift has a wide range of species including 360 species of birds, 120 species of mammals, over 200 species of butterflies, about 324 tree species and a large number of wildlife.

ACCESS TO THE PARK:
The Park is spread over the districts of Kabale, Rukungiri and Kisoro Districts. It’s about 6-7 hours drive from Kampala to Kabale and covers a distance of 4140 km.
From Kabale to the Buhoma park headquarters, with 120 km (3-4 hours) via Kanungu and Kanyantoroogo on murram surface, and 95 Km (about 3-4 hours) through Kabale to Ruhija toBuhoma. A 4WD vehicle is recommended to travel to the Park.

GORILLA TRACKING EXPERIENCE:
Gorilla trekking is the major tourist attraction in Bwindi impenetrable forest.
The park has four gorilla groups available daily for tracking.
The groups include:
- Mubare group, comprising of 10 gorillas and 1 silverback opened in 1993.
- Habinyanja group, comprising of 18 gorillas and 1 silverback, opened in July 1998.
- Rushegura group comprising of 10 gorillas and 1 silverback was opened in July 2002
- Nkuringo group comprising of 19 gorillas and 2 silver backs was opened in July 2002, ,

Note:
- Only 8 persons can track per group.
- The tracking experience commences at 8:30 am and can last the whole day.
- Bookings for Gorilla Permits are done at least 3 months in advance to ensure availability.
- Gorilla tracking is a challenging activity and trackers must ensure physical fitness.
Gorilla Rules and regulations:

  • Gorilla tracking is only allowed to persons above 15 years.
  • A maximum of 1 hour is allowed to Visitors while viewing gorillas.
  • Don’t make loud noise or move suddenly.
  • Don’t get closer than 7 meters (21 feet) to the gorillas.
  • Flashes are not allowed while photographing the Gorillas.
  • Visitors with a communicable disease are not allowed to enter the park.(Flu, Diarrhoea)
  • Don’t eat or smoke when with the gorillas.
  • Don’t leave litter in the park as this must be disposed off properly.
  • Stay together in a tight group with gorillas.
  • Turn away from the Gorillas, and cover your mouth and nose while sneezing.
  • Don’t spit on Vegetation or soil while in the park. Always use a hankie.

Requirements for tracking.

  • Jungle shoes are needed for steep muddy slopes.
  • Rain gear/Rain Jacket, insect repellant, a hat and sun screen as the whether is unpredictable.
  • Packed Lunch
  • Ear plugs for those who feel un-comfortable with jungle sounds. 

OTHER ATTRACTIONS
NATURE WALKS

Bwindi Impenetrable park has 4 hiking trails. These give the guests an opportunity to view attractions including primates, birds, trees and butterflies.
Trails include: River Ivi trail which is the longest in the park, and is highly recommended for Bird watchers. The waterfall trail, leads to crystal waterfalls with colorful orchids, butterflies and epiphytic ferns. The Munyanga River trail is ideal for short walks
to view birds and primates of the forest. The Bamboo Trail offers panoramic views of Lake Bunyonyi and Mafuga forest. Muzubijiro Loop Trail, with views of the Western Rift Valley, the Virungas, pre-historic tree ferns and is also a great picnic site. The Rushura Trail with views of Congo’s Parc Nationale des Virungas, Lake Edward, the Rwenzori Mountains and the western rift valley floor. Buhoma Village Tourist walk with a visit to brewing local beer making, rural homesteads, farming, customs and practices of the Bakiga and Batwa people and Trail in your car by crossing the rugged centre of the park through Ruhija. This gives you views of primates, forest and grassland bird species as well as duikers.


BIRD WATCHING EXPEDITIONS:
The Park has about 23 of Uganda’s 24 Albertine rift Endemics, 90% of all which cannot be found in other parts of East Africa. The wide variety of Birds, threatened endemics like the Shelley’s Crimson wing and African Green Broadbill. Other species include the Great Blue and Black billed Turacco, Green tinker bird, Waller’s starling, Lagden’s Bush shrike, Mountain yellow Warblers, Blue headed and regal sunbirds, Northern Olive Thrush, Cinnamon-chested Bee-eaters, Red-chested fluff tail, Mountain masked and Chestnut throated apalises, Pink footed puff back, striking Handsome Francolin etc


CULTURAL PERFORMANCES:
Traditional dances are performed by women and orphan groups in the Evenings. These portray cultures and traditions of the local people, and proceeds are used to improve the welfare of the families that around the National park.
